Beal Residence

For this job on Schroon Lake, we replaced a zero-clearance fireplace with a solid stone masonry fireplace. After meeting with Malcolm Beal for several hours, and driving around Schroon Lake and Northwoods Club looking at fireplaces, we had a pretty good idea of what he wanted to do. The only problem was where to get the stone. I thought I had noticed some as I was driving down the driveway.Their property is very narrow and steep and at first glance you wouldn't really notice that there was much stone around. I walked up the hill and into the woods and started looking around. Underneath about three inches of thick moss were huge piles of granite and, as you can see, it's beautiful stone. The keystone is quite large for this size fireplace. The firebox has a 36 inch opening, and the keystone is nearly 20 inches tall. It was pretty big but it was nearly perfect right out of the ground so we just had to use i!. This fireplace also has a glass door that you don't see in the pictures because it comes off quite easily. The frame for the door fits inside the arch so you don't have an ugly band of steel covering your stonework - a nice solution!
