Allison Residence
This fireplace is located in Schroon Lake. The Allisons were open to looking at lots of fireplaces. We went to several in the area, and then settled on a design. A few months went by before I was to actually start. In the meantime I had an idea about a fireplace - I was thinking about combining cedar logs and fieldstone. I drew a quick sketch of it in my notepad. When I went to meet Jim to finalize plans he noticed the sketch as I flipped through my pad. He asked to see it, so I described what I was thinking about. He decided to throw out the old design and go with the log and stone idea. A few weeks later I saw an interesting design for the Kiva fireplace which has a curved Rumford type firebox. I wanted to incorporate that in this fireplace. The Allison's said okay. The curved box led to a curved front face. They were okay on that also! The stone came from a neighbor's old wall and has a rougher texture than river rock due to exposure to the sun. With their slightly rounded corners, they look old as soon as you put them up.The mantle is a nice 3" butternut slab with a curve to match the stone face.
